How to Safely Change a Flat Tire

A flat tire is a stressful experience that we all have to deal with at some point. Here are some important steps you can take to make the process of changing a flat as safe and easy as possible.

  • First, make sure you have the proper tools before the flat occurs. That means having a spare tire, a jack, and a lug nut wrench. This is the minimum, you should also have a torque bar for stubborn lug nuts, and a jack-stand you can place under the vehicle once raised.
  • Begin loosening the lug nuts while the car is still safely on the ground. Then carefully place the jack where indicated by your owners manual, and operate the jack according to the instructions. It is important that the jack is properly placed and on level ground, and that at no point you or any part of your body get under the vehicle when it is raised.
  • Once raised, finish removing the lug nuts, remove the tire, and put the spare on, lining up the holes in the tire with the pins in the rotor. Hand tighten all of the lug nuts and lower the vehicle until the tire is firmly on the ground. Take the wrench and begin tightening the lug nuts using a star pattern, make sure you get them as tight as possible. Finish lowering the vehicle and then remove the jack and any other tools or parts around the car.
